]]><![CDATA[News from the Social Group]]>Wed, 12 Dec 2018 11:52:16 GMThttps://www.stmaryshowth.com/st-marys-social-group/news-from-the-social-groupAt their last meeting, the Tuesday Social Group were in the Hall, hard at work preparing decorations for Christmas.

It was a really successful afternoon with 17 folk there. Joanna and Marcin (proprietors of "The Wheelhouse Restaurant") were so lovely and enthusiastic. They had prepared material in advance for us and had baked the shapes which we painted and then decorated the trees. The trees were a cut down artificial tree and bases made from recycled containers were covered with a serviette.

We hope that they will be back next year.

So far we have had a convening meeting, an outing to the National Gallery and on the 23rd October Barbara McMurtry designed a short quiz entitled "who is well known for these sayings?"

Two examples. "I still haven't found what I'm looking for", and "I have nothing to declare, only my genius" - any ideas?

At the same meeting Shirley Moore, currently visiting from Canada spoke interestingly about life in Canada.

The next meeting, on Tuesday 9th October, will be a visit to the National Gallery. We will leave Howth on the 13:40 DART - last Carriage to arrive at the gallery for 2:30. ​]]><![CDATA[Jacob's Biscuit Factory Exhibition]]>Tue, 08 May 2018 22:04:36 GMThttps://www.stmaryshowth.com/st-marys-social-group/jacobs-biscuit-factory-exhibition​On Tuesday, 27 March 2018, nine members and a guest visited the City Hall to see an exhibition on Jacob’s Biscuit Factory. It was comprised mainly of posters and photographs, with a few artifacts which unfortunately were very poorly illuminated. However, everything else made up for that small defect, as there was so much to absorb and learn about Jacob’s.
Two brothers, William and Robert Jacob, inherited a ships’ biscuit factory from their father in Waterford in 1850. It was so successful that by 1870 the brothers had leased premises in Peter Street in Dublin. Business continued to increase and by 1903 there were two hundred lines in production. By the late 1930’s, six thousand tons of biscuits were exported annually. Three hundred different varieties were being made and the workforce, who were mainly women, numbered three thousand. At this time, the decoration on biscuits was done by hand! 
The Jacob’s archives were donated by Valeo Foods, who had bought the Tallaght factory in 2008. These, along with memorabilia collected by Douglas Appleyard (a member of staff for over 40 years), were donated to the Dublin City Library’s Archive in 2012.
Jacob’s took a great interest in the welfare of their staff. There were numerous sporting clubs, a dentist visited the factory every week, a doctor called regularly, and a coffee bar was installed for the workers long before it was considered an essential part of work-places.
As our group viewed the exhibition the conversation was punctuated frequently with “Do you remember...........? “ and,  “I loved........!” We gazed at the varied designs of the boxes, and recalled the days when biscuits were sold from tin boxes with glass lids, all temptingly displayed. It was interesting to learn that many variety boxes were named to celebrate events, e.g. Jubilee, USA, Carnival, Pic Nic, etc.
We recalled our favorite biscuits with nostalgia and most of us agreed it was broken biscuits. You could never know what delights would turn up in the bag, but you always hoped for a large number of broken chocolate biscuits. On Shrove Tuesday (13th February) the St. Mary's Social Group are meeting in the Parish Centre at 2:30pm for pancakes and a chat. All are always welcome.

Some upcoming dates for the diary are
Tuesday 27th February - visit to cinema. Further details at the meeting on Feb 13th.
Tuesday 13th March - Meet in Parish Centre at 2:30pm
Tuesday 27th March - proposed visit to TCD to see the Garland of Howth. Details to be confirmed.

Message from Ann
Plan for visit is to travel on Dart which leaves Howth at 13.45 on Tuesday, 30 January. Cost of ticket is €7.50, booked in advance online. Cost of ticket at entry is €9.00. I am happy to do a block booking, provided I receive names and cash, no later than Sunday, 28 Jan . I plan to be in St Mary’s on 28 th to get names, contact numbers and €7.50 per person wishing to travel.
