Garden Gang do it againThanks to those who turned up on Saturday 10th great work was done by the gang. The forecast was not good, but apart from one shower it turned into quite a pleasant morning.
The 'big chop' to prepare the garden for the winter will take place in October, all offers of help appreciated. Toddler Group needs some helpCan you help?A request from the Peninsula Community Sponsorship Group for Refugees
A group of around 12 people from the Howth/Sutton area have been meeting over the last few weeks to explore how we can help a Syrian Refugee family to settle here. We are working with the Irish Refugee Council under the auspices of the Department of Justice, and we will shortly be receiving specific training. Our immediate aim is to find accommodation, which we know will be a huge challenge. This is why we are now asking for help from the wider community.
Once we have found a suitable house the family will be brought directly here from a Refugee camp either in the Lebanon or Jordan. It is our responsibility to welcome them and to give them whatever support they need, and to help them to integrate into our local community. The idea is to help the family to become independent over a period of roughly two years. We are looking to rent a 3/4 bedroom house locally for a period of two years. Once the family is here the Government will pay the HAP rent but as a sponsorship group we need to raise a minimum of €10,000 to cover expenses needed for setting up the house and providing essential comforts for the family. Do you know of any property in the area that could be made available for such a family? Perhaps there is a house lying empty at the moment? Landlords sometimes tire of the business of managing tenants. Perhaps, however, a landlord may feel moved to help a Syrian family who have suffered greatly in their war-torn country and might be willing to make an exception and allow them to rent while they become settled. In such a case, we, as a Sponsorship group, may act as landlords for the duration of the two-year period. There are also some religious orders who no longer need houses that they purchased, and you may be aware of such a situation. If you can help us with any ideas we would be delighted to hear from you. |
