Welcome to St. Mary's Golfing Society. We are a group of parishioners who enjoy knocking a golf ball around. We organise various golfing events around the year and also manage to raise finds for the church at the same time. Final Outing Friday 14th September, Sutton Golf Course
Dear Fellow Golfers,
It's just under four weeks until our final outing at Sutton Golf Course on Friday 14th September. This is our main event of the year with great ongoing support from our sponsors and increasing numbers taking part. Last year we had nearly 60 golfers teeing off and 80 attending dinner. This year we are hoping to have the same great turnout.
Captain Andrew Bryce and the committee look forward to welcoming you all on the day. The course is in great condition, so great golf can be expected. For those members who enjoyed our last outing at Clontarf, the Jackie Tinnion Cup will be awarded to the player with the best combined scores from the two outings. Ladies will also have the opportunity to win the Joe Dalton Cup which was awarded last year for the first time. Ladies please, spread the word, you are most welcome.
The dinner in the evening is always great fun with loads of great prizes to be won. So cancel any other arrangements you might have had for the day and come and join us for a great day out. Details of tee times and entry costs will be issued shortly.
Sutton Captain's Wife, Susan McInerney, presenting the Captain's Prize to Gavin Caldwell, together with Captain Patrick Lawless and John McMillan, Hon Sec.
It was a record breaking day for our Society's Golf Outing on the 15th September at Sutton Golf Club. Compared to the last 10 years, we had the most golfers teeing off (55), the most ladies playing (16), the greatest number of sponsors (16) and a total of 77 golfers and guests enjoying an excellent dinner in Sutton Golf Club. All in all, this meant that the day raised close to €3,000 towards Church funds. Even the weather was kind to the enthusiastic golfers. Great credit goes to our Captain, Patrick Lawless, who was able to use his far reaching connections to bring new members and sponsors to our society. Patrick has now laid out a vision for our society which will enable the committee to focus on lowering the age profile (of us ageing golfers) to include junior members and, as always, to welcome more ladies. Patrick was ably assisted by Andrew Bryce who brought a fresh eye to the operations of the society as well as helping to increase the numbers of golfers. Credit also goes to John Sullivan, Hon Treasurer, who had to deal with increasing revenue streams from our three outings at Malahide, Clontarf and Sutton. Special mention goes to Fred Spendlove, Don Jermyn and Derek Dickson who efficiently collated the scores and prizes for all outings. A special thanks goes to all our Sponsors, without whose support we would be unable to make a success of the day. They were: Appian Assest Management Arena Group Professional Burlington Real Estate Elevate Selection DKF Construction Jus de Vin McCartan's Pharmacies Golden Elephant Restaurant McGuirks Golf Paddy Devine, Sutton G.C. Paulmer Jewellers Colin Byrne Oar House Restaurant Marine Hotel White Sands Hotel Andrew Berry Our Sponsors are truly appreciated, and where possible, we would encourage parishioners to avail of their goods and services. There were plenty of golfing prizes to be won. The winner of the Captain's Prize was Gavin Caldwell and the winner of the Ladies Captain's Prize was Mary Cooper. A new cup for the Ladies Prize called the Joe Dalton Cup was presented. Joe was last year's captain. This was an initiative sponsored by Patrick Lawless. The Sponsors Prize was won by Greg Lawless and the Visitors Prize was won by Billy Navan. The Jackie Tinnion Cup, for the best composite score for the three outings was won by Rev Alan Rufli. The uncertainties of Brexit are still with us and not much progress has been made since I wrote last year's Sutton Outing entry. But what is certain, is that our Society is on an upward track thanks to Patrick's leadership. The committee looks forward to next year's golfing season building on what has been achieved this year.
